VETASSESS has announced revisions to the criteria for applying for a number of general occupations. These revisions are effective as of today – 7 January 2020. The VETASSESS General Occupation changes need to be carefully reviewed in conjunction with the recent updates to ANZSCO’s occupation list.
VETASSESS is a leading independent skills assessment authority in Australia and a trusted partner for Australian Governments. They provide skills assessments for migration purposes, for both general occupations as well as trade occupations.
General Occupations vs. Trade Occupations
The occupations for Skills Assessments are split into two categories:
- General Professional Occupations: VETASSESS assesses both employment and qualifications to be able to provide a positive Skills Assessment for general occupations.
- Trade Occupations: VETASSESS currently assesses 25 trade occupations. For example, they assess plumbers, welders, cooks, chefs, carpenters, etc.
What Occupations do these changes apply to?
The VETASSESS General Occupation changes apply to occupations within the General Professional Occupations. Within this category, there are multiple ‘Groups’.
Each group specifies different requirements that need to be met. For example, the occupation of Dental Hygienist previously sat in Group E. Due to the changes, Dental Hygienist is now in Group A.
When the occupation was in Group E, the Skills Assessment Criteria was as follows:
Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Diploma level with a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of postqualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years.
However, in Group A, the Skills Assessment Criteria for Dental Hygienist is now:
Qualification(s) assessed at Australian Bachelor degree or higher degree with a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years.
VETASSES General Occupation changes
Here are the VETASSESS General Occupation changes, as released by VETASSESS:
The main changes are that some occupations have been moved to another ‘Group’. To clarify, the group determines the requirements that need to be met, for an applicant to be able to receive a positive skills assessment.
